Den and Peg Buchholz began publishing The Country Register of Wisconsin in May of 1994.
Peg was working in a craft store in a small town and many customers came in and asked if there were other interesting shops in the area. Often times she would end up writing down names and addresses of shops for them to visit making her think something was needed to hand out to these people to give them a great overview of what was available in the area.
At that same time, Den was getting ready to sell his business of 16 years. He really didn’t know what he wanted to do, but felt it was time to sell and move on. After he sold the business they took a short trip to visit some friends in Ohio. While there, Peg and her friend went to lunch and checked out some of the shops in the area. At one of the shops she picked up The Country Register of Ohio and immediately knew that it was the very thing that Wisconsin needed.
Upon arriving home they called some of their friends in the area who owned specialty shops and asked them what they thought of such a paper. Peg and Den were met with enthusiasm by everyone they talked to! There was no trouble at all getting people to advertise with their new venture. Their son also started The Country Register of Minnesota and later sold it as well as their daughter and her husband publishing The Country Register of Wyoming for a short time.
A few years after starting the Wisconsin paper, the Buchholz opened a scrapbook/stamp store. Of course they put an ad in the paper and couldn’t believe how many people came and said they found the shop because of The Country Register. Now there was firsthand proof that the paper really worked and worked well!
Now in their 14th year of publishing, Den and Peg still really enjoy this business which shows in the many pages of their wonderful Wisonsin edition. They are very thankful to Barbara Floyd who started The Country Register and allowed them to follow her lead.
