Decorating Inspiration and Ideas
by Glena Dunn, The Country Register of Southern Nevada
Look to The Country Register for the latest trend in decorating with salvaged antique and vintage finds. Find out where and how to 'pick'. Load up on inspiration and treasures at one of the 'junk shows' that are sweeping the country. Find a shop near you that carries Annie Sloan or a similar brand of chalk paint and sign up for a class to learn the techniques that will bring your pieces to new life. Learn when to paint and when not to. With imperfections lending charm, it is often preferable to enhance the chippy layers or rusty patina than to paint over them. (And never paint over select grain wood such as tiger or birdseye, unless it is just too far gone.) Learn what fabrics and even fonts to choose to blend your pieces and achieve the cottage look. Use Facebook to find inspiring examples and how-to's on painting, tea-dyeing, and using embellishments to create unique, one-of-a-kind pieces. Check each issue of your Country Register for other inspiration.
Soon you will find yourself taking a second look at things you are about to discard, and even scouting the curbside for what others with a less creatively trained eye may have thrown away! Have fun joining in the movement to preserve and repurpose the well-made items from the past, while adding a cozy elegance to your decor.
Issue by issue, through the seasons, The Country Register brings you the elements and tips to bring this inviting and fashionable decorating to your home.
